Surya Namaskar
Sun Salutation
Surya Namaskar Sun Salutation
Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, is a traditional yoga practice consisting of a sequence of linked yoga poses (asanas) performed in a continuous flow and synchronized with the breath.
The name is derived from the Sanskrit words Surya (Sun) and Namaskar (Salutation or Greeting). It is traditionally practiced at sunrise to honour the sun as the source of all life and energy.
Surya Namaskar is a complete practice that warms up the body, improves strength and flexibility, builds focus, and calms the mind, serving as a foundational practice in most traditions of Hatha Yoga.
Each round of Surya Namaskar involves moving through a sequence of specific poses, usually repeated a set number of times.
Key Aspects of Surya Namaskar:
- Meaning: "Surya" means sun, and "Namaskar" means salutation or greeting, making this practice a "Salute to the Sun".
- Purpose: It is a holistic practice that offers physical exercise, boosts energy, and provides a spiritual connection, expressing gratitude to the sun.
- Timing: Traditionally done in the morning facing the rising sun but can also be done in the evening.
- Structure: A sequence of linked poses, often repeated multiple times, with variations existing depending on your capacity and flexibility.
- Benefits: A full-body workout, stress reliever, spine strengthener, and mind calmer, making it excellent for both beginners and experienced yogis alike.
A course in Surya Namaskar lasts about one hour. The time of its practice depends upon the number of repetitions of the sequence.
Surya Namaskar will be available as an optional extra on Peace Palace Retreats. Details will be provided shortly.
Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga
If you are unable to perform Set 1 of Maharishi Yoga Asanas, this is the thing for you!
Chair Yoga is derived from Sukshma Vyayama (subtle yoga exercises). It involves gentle postures and movements that energise the body and mind, help prepare for deeper yoga or meditation, as well as improve overall well-being.
Chair Yoga can be performed sitting upright in a chair or at a desk, either at home or in the office, or on a bus, train or plane
These exercises:
- relax the body and the mind
- remove stress, stiffness and tension, especially from the joints
- balance and strengthen all inner bodily systems
- can be performed easily and effortless, without any strain
Therapeutic
Spinal Exercises
Therapeutic Spinal Exercises
The Therapeutic Spinal Exercises of Maharishi Yoga offer a transformative pathway to cultivate and sustain the health and well-being of your spine. These specially crafted exercises serve to realign structural irregularities such as kyphosis, lordosis, and scoliosis, enhancing the overall functionality of your spinal cord, blood circulation, cerebro-spinal fluid, vertebral discs, lymphatic system, and nervous system.
Often described as "auto-chiropractic," these exercises empower you to gently and consciously adjust specific vertebrae or discs and bring them back into their optimal positions. All of this is done in a state of complete muscular relaxation, giving you a hands-on role in your own spinal health.
Beyond spinal well-being, these exercises also contribute to the improved functioning of vital internal organs and serve as preparatory work for Maharishi Yoga Āsanas.
Please note that lying rotations reveal blockages on many levels and help us to realise old movement-patterns. In this way, tight structures become more flexible.
A truly healthy spine is one that is free from stiffness and pressure, imparting a sensation of lightness, almost as if your spine is floating. These spinal exercises guide us on the path to a healthy, aligned spine.
A course in these Maharishi Yoga Therapeutic Spinal Exercises will be available as an optional extra on Peace Palace Retreats. Details will be provided shortly.
Eight-Joint
Release Sequence
Eight-Joint-Release Sequence
This gentle sequence, also known as Aṣṭa Sandhi Vimochana Kriyā, stems from the classical yoga lineages in India.
It is designed to release tension from the major joints of the body, from the head right down to the feet.
It is an effective warm-up for any physical activity, including Surya Namaskar.
This sequence will be available as an optional extra on Peace Palace Retreats. Details will be provided shortly.
Six Therapeutic
Pranayamas
Six Therapeutic Pranayamas
Maharishi Yoga pranayamas, breathing techniques, recently sometimes referred to as “breathwork”, promote physical and mental well-being. They provide the practitioner with the self-care tools necessary to build physical, mental, and emotional strength and resilience when faced with stress and other negative emotions.
Maharishi Yoga includes various different types of Pranayamas with differing qualities, for example purifying, stimulating, strengthening, as well as cooling, heating, and balancing.
The pranayamas included in Maharishi Yoga are:

Travel Directions
TRAVEL BY CAR
Set your course for relaxation by entering IP12 2GX into your SATNAV, Apple Maps, or Google Maps. As you approach the Peace Palace, you'll find our designated parking area right behind the building. Just a friendly reminder, the kerbs are a bit high, so take your time while parking. For quick stops, we have two spaces at the front for unloading or pick-up only.
TRAVEL BY TRAIN
Enjoy a scenic train ride just over an hour and a half from London Liverpool Street Station. Hop on the Norwich train and alight at Ipswich, where you'll switch to the Lowestoft Line heading to Melton. To ensure your journey is smooth and seamless, be sure to book your ticket through to Melton Suffolk (avoid Melton Mowbray!).
TAXI FROM MELTON TO RENDLESHAM
Once you arrive at Melton, a short taxi ride will bring you to our serene sanctuary. Since taxis are based in nearby Woodbridge, it's a good idea to book in advance, especially on Friday afternoons when arrival times can coincide with the School Run. We recommend M&R Cars (01394 386661) and CarsSmart (01394 461 461). Most taxis accept credit cards, but there are exceptions so it's handy to have some cash in Pounds Sterling just in case. We apologise, but the Peace Palace does not have the ability to collect Retreat/Course participants from the station or arrange taxi bookings on your behalf.
TRAVEL BY AIR
Flying in from afar? Three choices for your souring start to serenity.
STANSTED AIRPORT
Your closest gateway to peace. From there, you can enjoy a direct taxi ride (around £120-160), whisking you straight to our doorstep. Alternatively, you can take a coach to Ipswich (about £20) followed by a taxi to Rendlesham (about £30).
FLYING INTO LONDON HEATHROW OR GATWICK? NO PROBLEM!
- From Heathrow Airport, embark on the London Underground's Elizabeth Line to reach London Liverpool Street Station. Prefer the train? Catch one to London Paddington, then hop on the Underground to Liverpool Street. Both routes offer a seamless transition to your peaceful retreat.
- From Gatwick Airport, catch a train to London Victoria, then choose between the Underground or a taxi to whisk you to London Liverpool Street Station. From there, your peaceful journey to the Peace Palace is just a train ride away.
We can't wait to welcome you to our haven of relaxation and rejuvenation. Safe travels and see you soon at the Peace Palace!
